“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals.” – Sydney Smith
Success has literally nothing to do with speed or skill, but it has everything to do with ones chosen direction. It’s all about the goals you set for yourself, and taking it a step further, even more about sticking to those goals!
The first step in your goal setting journey is to set SMART goals. Your goal setting strategies must be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time Bound. Your goals must also be written down. You will meet with little success in your goal setting exercise by setting goals about as powerful as an average New Years Resolution – “I want to earn more money”, “I want to work less”, “I want to set better goals”. Your goals should keep you awake at night, not put you to sleep in the middle of the afternoon.
The second step is breaking large goals down into smaller easily obtainable mini goals. How many people to do you need to bring into your business monthly to reach your goal? How many is that per year? How many per month? How many per day? Once this number is clear in your minds eye, make a list of the daily actions required to achieve your new mini goal. Get to work on your mini goal and celebrate every time you reach it.
The third step is to focus. People sometimes loose sight of the fact that they’re running a real business, and that they need to do things differently than they would do in a regular 9 to 5 job. You are the business, not simply an employee. You have no boss making sure you stay focused, the responsibility is all yours. To a lot of people this may be a scary idea, but to others the idea is liberating. You just need to muster the discipline to maintain your focus. Organize your day, plan your actions, and don’t settle for anything less than a day you can feel proud of.
The fourth step is perseverance. Never give up. Never, ever. It is your unwavering drive to succeed that will give you the power to weather any storm, and outlast every one else around you. All you need to do is keep on moving forward. Imagine you’re climbing a mountain. You may stumble, trip, and occasionally fall, but every single step you take is a step in the right direction, and with every step the view becomes more clear and focused. Keep your eyes on the goal, and keep moving towards it. You will make it.
The fifth step is to use all the help available to you. Attend every training course you can, read at least 30 minutes every day, learn from every one you can, and form a mastermind with a group of inspirational people. Use every resource available to you. Thousands of people have Been There and Done That before you, so leverage their experience. Woodrow Wilson, former President of the United States, put it best: “I not only use all the brains that *I* have, but all that I can borrow.”
The most important aspect of achieving your goals is to set them in the first place. It’s unbelievable how many people say “Yeah yeah, I know all about goal setting” but they have attempted to set goals and write them down. Don’t fall into this trap. There is a gigantic difference between knowing and doing. Set your goals now, and be like a postage stamp – stick to them until you get there!
To your success!
