There are many forms of social media and social marketing on the internet but none is as large as YouTube. YouTube was originally designed as a place for users to post their videos and movies but has since evolved into one of the largest video marketing websites on the internet. The term virul video is used to describe a video advertising services or a product and the numbers of these videos has been ever increasing over the past few years.

When YouTube was first created only a few businesses thought that it would be good for any kind of video marketing. As mentioned it was primarily made for amateur film makers to upload their own virul video’s to. However as the user base increased companies started to take notice and began undertaking research studies. These studies were aimed to find out how many people were using online video sites and how much time they were spending on the internet.

This wasn’t some ploy by an evil organization to monitor and control everyone but simply a study to see if advertising through an online video website would be worth it. Sure enough their research paid off and the amount of people that were using sites like YouTube to watch and upload videos was higher than originally anticipated. When this study was released most major corporations were both enlightened and surprised.

Mass advertising through TV commercials was starting to wear off about this time and most companies had no idea why. When the study was released everything suddenly clicked together and they knew that they had to take advantage of video marketing in order to stay successful. One virul video could pack just as much if not more information than the standard TV commercial and only be about 15 to 30 seconds long.

This made the need for advertising departments to rework their ideas paramount and also ushered in a higher demand for individuals with photo or video editing experience. After all video marketing does require someone with video editing experience to make a virul video in the first place. Currently advertising with online videos is one of the main methods that companies of all sizes use to get their information around.

Add to the fact that social networking sites allow you to link your profile with a video site like YouTube and everything is becoming much more interconnected than it used to be. Potential and current advertisers are also having to make their videos or images smaller to meet the demands of mobile computing. Modern cell phones are almost as capable as a small notebook computer now and allow their users to watch video while surfing the web.

Being able to connect to social sites, watch video, listen to music, take pictures, send pictures, and perform a variety of other functions are some of the main attractions to modern phones. A few of the high end models even have the ability to edit video and then upload the finished project to the internet.

Video marketing is showing no signs of slowing down and is in fact picking up speed. The more connected our society becomes with the internet the better the chances are of finding new customers with something as simple as virul video. Companies or individuals alike can make a video and upload it within 24 hours or less depending on what they want to advertise. To say it’s a very powerful marketing strategy would be an understatement at best.

    Hi Mark,

I'm new to using YouTube for my business. At the moment, it's not something I enjoy a lot. I know it doesn't have to be fancy, but there's always that part of me that's looking for the “perfect” take.

I did recently put a video on my site explaining my project consultation process. In that case, I could see the value in someone being able to get a feel for me before we talk on the phone.

I suppose I'll get better at it as I go along.

One area that I do enjoy, somewhat related to YouTube, is an audio podcast. I finally got that running on iTunes. Having a radio background, I guess I'm more comfortable in that realm.

While not quite as personal as a video, it still has the advantage of helping prospects get a feel for you. And at least in my niche, it certainly helps me to stand out.

    Hi Mike,
I went over to YouTube and watched the two video's you have posted there. I thought the first one you did came across a little more relaxed and genuine, although the second one was pretty good as well. Keep in mind that your video's do not have to be head shots of you talking. A lot of video advertising experts are recommending short video advertisements using your voice along with a power point presentation. These are much easier to make, and edit. I can see you doing one in which you walk your potential clients though what a magalog is, while showing actual examples as you talk. Any way, great job and keep up the good work!

Actually, Mark, that idea will be the next video. I'm going to be speaking to a group online in July where we'll be using Webinar to walk through some magalogs. Since I have to prepare some magalogs for that presentation anyway, I'll use a program like Jing to do a desktop recording for YouTube prior to that.

    Thanks for the comments.
